Facebook unveils new app to boost user connections

Beneath this, there´s a list of upcoming events that Facebook considers might be interesting for the users. In a nutshell, Facebook is encouraging people with similar interests to connect with each other thus enabling a new channel of communications. What are your thoughts on Facebook's new Discover People section on its mobile app?

Nevertheless, some analysts suggest that the silver lining of this new feature is that it would be quite beneficial for business networking and dating purposes, given the fact that its structure allows someone to simply find your profile then tap to message you.

Below the Discover People´s events section, there are other sections filled with profiles of many people from other events the user had attended, or even people who live near or work at the same place. The feature has apparently started rolling out for users on Android and iOS, but hasn't been carpet bombed for all users yet. Upon opening the section, users get access to a list of people living in the same city or those working for the same company, provided that they actually mentioned that in their description.

Using Facebook events (many of which are public and visible to millions of people) as a measure for suggesting friends is a odd choice as it is likely to encourage connections, even harassment - let's not forget that there are a lot of nutters out there. Last year, the network was criticized for reducing the number of high-tier privacy settings and users have recently been warned about Facebook cloning - a tactic used by hackers who set up a fake account to approach your friends and family online.

None of these sections will show people that users are already friends with on Facebook. The feature was reportedly available to a very small number of mobile app users.
